Project overview
The evaluation examines whether participation in SACCOs improves savings behaviour, access to and use of credit, financial literacy, and women's leadership and decision-making within businesses, households, and communities. By comparing participating businesses with a control group, the research generates rigorous evidence on programme effectiveness and identifies opportunities for strengthening implementation.
The study also assesses how improved access to financial services contributes to enterprise growth, household resilience, and inclusive economic development. Its findings support the continued expansion of community-based financial services for smallholder farmers and rural entrepreneurs.
Research impact
The evaluation provides valuable evidence for improving SACCO programmes and strengthening financial inclusion among smallholder farmers and agricultural workers. The findings guide Root Capital's future programme expansion while informing broader initiatives that promote economic empowerment, gender equality, and sustainable rural development.
