Signed, Sealed, Delivered: Digital Receipts in the Ugandan Dairy Chain research project

Project overview

Working in partnership with dairy cooperatives, the study evaluates the effectiveness of a digital receipt system that provides farmers with real-time information on milk volumes delivered and payments received. By reducing the informational advantage traditionally held by transporters, the research investigates whether increased transparency improves milk deliveries, enhances milk quality, and strengthens contractual relationships between farmers and transporters.

The study also explores how digital records can improve accountability throughout the dairy value chain while supporting the modernization of cooperative management systems. In addition, it assesses the potential of verified delivery records to facilitate farmers' access to credit and other financial services, contributing to broader efforts to digitalize agricultural markets in developing economies.

Research impact

The project generates valuable evidence on the role of digital technologies in improving transparency, trust, and efficiency within agricultural value chains. Its findings contribute to policies and innovations that strengthen cooperative governance, promote financial inclusion, and enhance productivity across the dairy sector.
