Project overview

Through a pilot randomized controlled trial, the study assesses the effectiveness of technical skills training, firm clustering, and improved access to productive capital in enhancing business performance. Working with metal fabrication enterprises in and around Kampala, the research examines how investments in technical capacity, collaboration, and production resources influence productivity, product quality, profitability, and business survival. The study also investigates how these interventions affect technology adoption, management practices, market access, and collaboration among firms. By addressing key constraints faced by SMEs, including limited technical skills, inadequate capital, and weak business networks, the research generates evidence on practical strategies for strengthening enterprise competitiveness.

Research impact

The project provides rigorous evidence on interventions that improve SME productivity and competitiveness. Its findings support policies and programmes aimed at promoting enterprise growth, industrial development, job creation, and the long-term competitiveness of Uganda's manufacturing sector.
